Tulips

TulipsScientific or Latin name: Tulipa spp.

Common or popular name:  Tulip, Liliaceae family

They originate from Central Asia, though it is possible to find tulips originating in Russia, China and France.  It is the most widespread flower in Holland. Its height reaches between 30 and 60 cm, depending on the variety.  There are thousands of varieties.

The best tulips for indoors are the first dwarf varieties. The most popular tulip varieties are:

  • Darwin Tulips
  • Fleur de Lys Tulips
  • Parrot Tulips
  • Botanical Tulips

Although they are not a demanding species, they favor loose earth, soft and rich in organic material. They can handle the cold well, in fact, they need to spend some periods with low winter temperatures in order to be able to produce qualities flowers. In climates with warm winters, many varieties of tulips can have problems, as high temperatures produces rapid blooming and low height.
Holland, for example, has an ideal climate for them.

You must keep in mind that tulips are very sensitive to overly high concentrations of salt in the earth. A low humidity environment can cause burns on the leaves and excessive loss of water, which diminishes the quality of the flower.Tulips are the most well-known and typical bulb.

There are a wide variety of tulips, on top of the natural species. Tulip blooming is short and you must anticipate it to stagger the varieties with each other.  The most simple classification of tulips is this:

  • Early Tulips: they bloom in Europe from the end of February to the end of March.
  • Semi-late Tulips: they bloom from March to the middle of April.
  • Late Tulips: from the middle of April to the beginning of May.
