Conserving flowers

Every flower is different in terms of its care and maintenance.

In this section we have tried to compile some tricks and general advice that will suit you well when it comes time to maintain the beauty of your flowers for a longer time.

Conserving Flowers

  1. If you are going to buy flowers, try to do it first thing in the morning, rejecting those that are in the sun and that have been there for several days.
  2. When you get home, leave them for a couple of hours with the stems entirely submerged in water to recuperate from the transportation.
  3. Tear off all the leaves that would be submerged in the water.
  4. Select a very clean vase.  For example, those made of silver have an antibacterial effect and preserve the flowers for a longer time.
  5. Don't touch the flowers too much, they will wilt more quickly.
  6. Avoid direct sunlight from windows, don't leave them in drafty air nor in high temperatures.
  7. If you set them out on the balcony or on the windowsill at night (as long as it is not too cold, obviously), they will last longer.
  8. If you use preservatives, you can double the life of your flowers, as long as you use appropriate quantities.  With these products, bacteria is eliminated, so you don't have to change the vase water daily.
  9. If you don't use preservatives, change the vase water daily and also cut off a little bit of the stem.
  10. The aspirin trick is also effective, but it is more expensive than preservatives.
  11. Put a couple drops of bleach into the vase to disinfect it, or you can also use a little bit of white vinegar.
  12. Other tricks consists in adding little drops of gin, using lemonade in place of water or putting in a copper penny.  The trick of adding sugar is not well-looked upon because it clogs the stems' ducts.
